Start with your Blogging Why

Start with your blogging why

Knowing why you are blogging is one of the best ways to stay consistent.  Sitting down at your computer with no idea what to write about can be frustrating.  One of the best ways to overcome, what I like to call Bloggers Block (like writers block but for bloggers), is to know why you’re writing not only your blog but each specific blog post.

In this 4-week series, I’m going to share how you can set the groundwork for your blog.  To help you stay consistent, create fans of your blog and begin to grow your blog.  Here’s what you can expect from the series:

1 – Start with your Blogging Why

2 – How to Create Consistent Content

3 – How to Share your Blog Posts and Be Seen

4 – Round-up – What Would Bloggers Tell Themselves

If you’ve been feeling a little bit lost with your blog.  Struggling for ideas and not sure what to do next, then this series is here to help you.

Start with your blogging why

Before we get started, let’s look at what is a blog?

A blog is defined as a regularly updated online page or website.

The key here is “regular”.

There are lots of ways to stay consistent and we’ll delve deeper into this in next weeks post.  However, if you’re not updating your blog with new content on a regular basis you’ve really not got yourself a blog.  By not sharing on a regular basis, google will lose interest in checking your site and so will your readers.

If you’re lacking in consistency and struggling with Bloggers Block one of the reasons why is you don’t know why you are blogging.  Like the real reason.  There’s a difference between your ‘deep down’ why and outcomes like to make money or travel the world.

Let’s start with outcomes and important aspects you might want to achieve with your blog:

    • To stand out as an expert in your niche.
    • To get Google to check you out and rank for certain subjects.
    • To share something – An experience, an opinion, a tip, a story.
    • To get readers to come back to your website.
    • Start with Why

These are all great reasons to be blogging but what if you went deeper than that?  This video from Simon Sinek, Start with Why, might make you think about why you want to blog:

3-Steps why you want to Blog

Step 1 – Thinking about the video above, what is your real why.  What is the ultimate reason for doing what you do? Inspiration, motivation and connection all come under this step.

Step 2 – Looking at the 4 outcomes above, which of these stands out to you the most?  Do you want to become the expert, have you got things to share, would you like to be found on google or do you want people to come to your site?  Chances are you want a mixture of all of these but if there is one which stands out more than the others then this is your primary focus.

Step 3 – Think about the ultimate goal for your blog.  What would you like to achieve in the next 3, 6 and 12 months?  A few ideas could be to have more readers, to make some money, to launch your own product or to simply have published a certain number of blog posts each month.  Your goals and dreams can be endless.  Whatever your goal is, this will help you know what your next actions for your blog are and what you need to be blogging about.

Step 4 – Start to brainstorm some blog post ideas using my free Blog Planning Workbook.  Making a list of all the ideas you have will give you blog posts for the next few weeks or even months.  This is a great place to start to prevent the Bloggers Block – You’ll always have some ideas!

Now you’ve begun to work out why you want to blog, the next step is to create consistent content which we will delve into next week.  Knowing why you blog is one of the best ways to stay consistent when it comes to blogging.  This will keep up your inspiration and motivation to keep publishing blog posts.
